A benefit for a Baptist minister who lost his job when he supported marriage equality will be held at DT’s in Richmond on Saturday February 11th.

In December last year Rev Matt Glover was stood down from his role as Pastor of the Melbourne’s Lilydale Baptist Church because he was one of many clergy who endorsed Australian Marriage Equality’s (AME) Christians for Equality campaign.

Benefit organiser and AME board member, Carl Katter, said

“Australian Marriage Equality and the GLBTI community want to show that we support those people who support us.”

“Rev Glover and his young family have lost an income and their church accommodation so we organised a benefit to help them through”.

“The response so far to the benefit has been fantastic – there is a lot of respect out there for Matt and his family and not just from the GLBTI community but also from a lot of Baptist parishioners.”

“People cannot really comprehend that such a popular pastor could be treated this way, especially for showing Christian values like compassion, acceptance and love.”

The benefit will start at 3pm on Saturday 11th of February at DT’s Hotel in Richmond and entry is free.

It will be hosted by well known young comedian Joel Creasy with an array of dynamic performances, such as Cath Jamison and Slash Darling. Some of the guest speakers will include Mr Rodney Croome and Mr Alex Greenwich from AME. Great prizes to be raffled and auctioned on the day such the chance to win a dinner with local MP Adam Bandt and a fantastic weekend away in the country.

“A lot of these prizes have been donated by local businesses and members of the general public who have been incensed by what has happened”, Mr Katter said.

“We expect a great turn out on the day and encourage everyone to come who believes in a fair go for all.”

Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays have opened a bank account for donations. To find out more go to the Australian Marriage Equality Benefit for Rev Matt Glover facebook page here.
