TONY ABBOTT’S refusal to permit Coalition MPs a conscience vote on same-sex marriage will be just the second time in almost 60 years that Labor MPs have been granted a free vote on legislation but their opponents have not.

As Liberals vowed yesterday to keep agitating for a conscience vote on same-sex marriage when it comes before Parliament next year, a research paper by the Parliamentary Library shows that since 1950 there have been 31 conscience votes in the Parliament.
