In an interview with The Australian, the new Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon, has confirmed her support for marriage equality (details here). Advising the Government on the proposed ammendments to the Marriage Act sits within this portfolio.

Australian Marriage Equality National convener, Alex Greenwich, has welcomed her support and said it is reflective of how many minds have changed on the issue since 2004, when Nicola Roxon as Shadow Attorney-General supported the Howard Government’s ban on gay marriage:

“Nicola Roxon has engaged the electorate on this issue and like most Australians has changed her mind to support equality”

“She understands that this is a clear area of discrimination that impacts couples, families, and communities across Australia”

“In her new role as Attorney-General we are hopeful she will have the historic opportunity to put into law Labor’s marriage equality policy and the wishes of a clear majority of Australians” Mr Greenwich said.
