Marriage equality advocates say Labor right wing power-broker, Joe De Bruyn is wrong to claim Labor will lose seats if it backs same-sex marriage.

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said a recent national poll of voters by Galaxy research shows there will be a 4.6% swing to Labor, the equivalent of 755,000 voters.

“Scaremongers like Joe De Bruyn can predict the sky will fall in all they like, but the cold, hard facts are that Labor will benefit electorally from backing equality”, Mr Greenwich said.

“If the Party wants to maximise the electoral benefit of this reform, it must back equality as a Party rather than allow a conscience vote.”

Mr Greenwich said Mr De Bruyn should be honest with the public that his opposition to marriage equality is his own personal view and does not represent the views of the union he heads.

“Joe De Bruyn refuses to survey his union’s membership on this issue because he knows marriage equality has strong support in the retail and service sector his members are drawn from.”

“Polls show that young people are the strongest supporters of marriage equality. It stands to reason that the SDA membership, which is largely young people, would also support marriage equality” Mr Greenwich said.
