The Victorian Labor Party has endorsed full marriage equality at today’s state conference. The motion of support passed on the voices and was one of the first motions voted on today.

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, has welcomed the move calling it a victory for Labor members and equality supporters “Victorian Labor today proved they are listening to the party’s grassroots. Many within the party have campaigned long and hard for this motion and they have now delivered a victory for the majority of Australians who also support equality”

The Victorian Labor Party now joins their counterparts in South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, The ACT, Young Labor, and Labor Women, who have all passed motions of support for full equality at conferences this year.

“Ahead of the National Conference, Labor members across the country are making themselves heard loud and clear, they support marriage equality and want to see the party back it at a national level” Mr Greenwich said.

Earlier in the year Victorian State Leader Daniel Andrews joined a growing number of Victorian MPs, including Bronwyn Pike and Martin Folley, who have long advocated for marriage equality. Speaking to the 730 report Mr Andrews said: “I, like a growing number of Victorians, believe that it’s unfair that same-sex couples in Victoria – indeed right across Australia – are not able to exercise the option,” ( full details here ) . Recent polling has indicated that 74% of Labor Voters and 65% of Victorians also support the reform (details here).
