Ahead of debate on a marriage equality motion at this weekend’s Victorian State Labor Conference, equality advocates are hopeful Labor’s Victorian branch will have the opportunity to reinstate their support for same-sex marriage. A conference earlier in the year was marred by rumours that an “engineered walk-out” prevented a vote from happening. (Details here)

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said:

This weekend’s conference provides Victorian Labor with another chance to demonstrate the strong support for marriage equality amongst the grassroots and leadership of the Victorian branch“.

Mr Greenwich said supporters will be looking to the conference to send a message of hope ahead of Labor’s National conference.

Same-sex couples, our parents, families and friends will be looking to this conference for re-assurance that backroom deals and procedural tricks won’t prevent the party from expressing the strong support for equality within Labor ahead of the National Conference in December“.

Earlier in the year Victorian State Leader Daniel Andrews joined a growing number of Victorian MPs, including Bronwyn Pike and Martin Folley, who have long advocated for marriage equality. Speaking to the 730 report Mr Andrews said: “I, like a growing number of Victorians, believe that it’s unfair that same-sex couples in Victoria – indeed right across Australia – are not able to exercise the option.” ( Full details here )

Recent polling has indicated that 74% of Labor Voters and 65% of Victorians also support the reform. (Details here)
