The ALP Federal Electorate Council for Warringah has voted unanimously in favour of marriage equality and has called on the Government to introduce legislation of its own to legalise same-sex marriage.

Warringah Federal Electorate Council spokesman Daniel Sharp said the council saw the denial of same-sex marriage as an ongoing form of discrimination towards a sizable proportion of society -a stance which it views as an “untenable and unjustifiable situation in contemporary Australia.”

Labor’s Warringah Federal Electorate Council Backs Same Gender Marriage

1st September 2011

At its August meeting, Labor’s Warringah Federal Electorate Council voted unanimously in support of same gender marriage, and called on the Gillard Labor Government to introduce legislation to this effect.

Warringah Federal Electorate Council considers the denial of same gender marriage as an ongoing form of discrimination towards a sizeable proportion of society, a stance which it views as an untenable and unjustifiable situation in contemporary Australia.

Warringah Federal Electorate Council spokesperson, Daniel Sharp, said the reform is long overdue and it was high time for Labor to support the removal of unfair discrimination towards same gender couples.

“This is a commonsense reform that builds on the Labor Government’s achievements to-date in removing much of the legal discrimination which had faced same gender couples prior to Labor’s election to government,” Mr. Sharp said.

“Labor has a proud history of breaking down social barriers and is the only progressive party which has the ability to implement these reforms.

“It’s time that we addressed this issue in the current parliament, before it’s too late,” Mr. Sharp said.

Mr. Sharp cited Opposition Leader and Warringah MP Tony Abbott’s vocal opposition to same gender marriages as one of the motivating factors, stating that if it is not dealt with under Labor, an Abbott-led Coalition government would continue to discriminate against same gender couples indefinitely.

“We all know Mr. Abbott is opposed to removing this form of blatant discrimination towards same gender couples and, true to form, he is likely to vote no in any vote on the issue.

“As a result, it is imperative that the Gillard Government legislates for this reform as soon as possible,” Mr. Sharp said.
