LABOR will back a Greens bill to grant greater autonomy to the ACT and Northern Territory after MPs received assurances that the bill would not lead to legalisation of same-sex marriage in the nation’s capital.

Greens leader Bob Brown’s bill, which stirred up divisions in caucus, aims to remove the power of a federal minister to override laws made by the ACT and the Northern Territory.

In March several of Labor’s Catholic Right confronted the Prime Minister over caucus’s initial support for the bill, fearing it would pave the way for the ACT to legislate on gay marriage and euthanasia.
