Australian same-sex couples who married overseas will fill out the Census on Tuesday knowing their union will be officially counted for the first time.

Australian Marriage Equality pushed for the change and has produced a guide showing couples how to complete the Census.

“We urge all same-sex partners who want to indicate they are married to take advantage of the fact that now they can,” said Peter Furness, a spokesman for Australian Marriage Equality.

Mr Furness, 42, married his partner Theo Phillip, 44, far from home in a small Canadian ceremony in 2006.

“We felt accepted in Canada, that we weren’t being looked down upon and that our relationship was viewed like any other,” he said.
