Malcolm Turnbull is under fire from the gay community for failing to endorse equal marriage rights, with leading activist Kerryn Phelps declaring his comments on the issue ”lack courage”.

Dr Phelps, a former head of the Australian Medical Association who lives in Mr Turnbull’s Sydney electorate of Wentworth, challenged him to ”come out – pun intended – and tell us what he really thinks and what he’s going to do in shadow cabinet”.

This week Mr Turnbull told the National Press Club he believed there was majority support for gay marriage and overwhelming support for civil unions. Appearing to favour civil unions, he said the intensity of opposition to gay marriage had to be taken into account.
