Marriage Equality advocates have welcomed the announcement by the Federal Member for Brisbane and Liberal MP, Teresa Gambaro, that 73% of her electorate support full marriage equality.

Ms Gambaro polled over 1500 people and also found that support for civil unions was very low, even amongst those who opposed marriage equality. (Full details here)

Ms Gambaro is the third Liberal Party MP to announce overwhelming electorate support for marriage equality, with Malcolm Turnbull reporting 75% of his electorate support reform, and Joe Hockey reporting 78% of young voters in his electorate support marriage equality

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich “The strong support for same-sex marriage in these key Liberal Party seats, proves that equality is an issue that voters across the political spectrum feel strongly about”.

Mr. Greenwich was also heartened by the low support for civil unions “This result also shows that Australians understand that separate is not equal, and they see that creating a 2nd class scheme will only further entrench discrimination”.
