Attitudes to same-sex marriages in Australia have dramatically changed, according to a new survey.

A poll of 1052 adult Australians conducted in May by Galaxy Research revealed 62 per cent of Australians support gay marriage, outweighing the number of people opposed to it (33 per cent) and those who had not made up their minds (5 per cent).

This represents a significant cultural shift from the results of a 2004 Newspoll, which showed 44 per cent were against the idea, 38 per cent in support and 18 per cent undecided.

The latest survey also found three out of four of us believe same-sex couples will inevitably be allowed to marry in Australia.

The belief was strongest among women (80 per cent), people aged under 50 (79 per cent) and people with young children (78 per cent).
