For Belmont teenagers Lea Mason and Karla Christensen Australia’s failure to legalise gay marriage makes them feel like second-class citizens.

They would one day like the opportunity to have their relationship formally recognised and perhaps raise children.

“I guess marriage isn’t for everybody but having the choice is probably the most important thing.”

The couple is hopeful that the political debate around same-sex marriage will soon make that aspiration a reality.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard is expected to sit down for dinner with three gay couples in coming weeks after lobby group GetUp! paid $31,100 for the chance to try and persuade her of the merits of same-sex unions.

While the numbers are unclear, youth workers estimate that one in 10 young people across the Geelong region are attracted to those of the same sex.
