The WA electorate of Brand will have its first openly gay candidate at the next Federal election in Parmelia man Patrick Turner, who says he is fed up with the Federal Government’s stance on same-sex marriage.
Mr Turner said he would run as an independent at the next election in three years time and begin campaigning this week.
He said current Brand MHR Gary Gray had made his views clear that he did not support same-sex marriage, which had made the one-time staunch Labor supporter decide to enter politics.
“We have not been listened to in Brand,” he said. “Mr Gray does not believe same-sex couples should be allowed to get married.
“It is time somebody stood up because we are not second-class citizens.”
