Labor supporters of same-sex marriage have returned fire at conservative forces within the party, accusing a powerful right wing union of childish,”breathtaking hypocrisy” by derailing a party debate on the issue.

After a vote on gay marriage at the Victorian ALP state conference — attended by Prime Minister Julia Gillard — was abandoned due to a lack of numbers, the Socialist Left faction accused the union of cynically trying to shut down debate.

In report on the conference, left secretary Andrew Giles said the Shop Distributors and Allied Employees Union had a “pre-modern” attitude on the controversial issue.
