Marriage equality advocates have called on Prime Minister, Julia Gillard’s de facto partner, Tim Mathieson, to support the right of same-sex couples to marry, following revelations Mr Mathieson would like to marry Ms Gillard.

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said that while Mr Mathieson and Ms Gillard have the choice to marry, Australia’s same-sex partners do not.

“Mr Mathieson is clearly someone who values marriage and the choice to marry, so we call on him to support the choice of same-sex couples to marry”, Mr Greenwich said.

“We wish Mr Mathieson and Ms Gillard well if they choose to marry, but we also urge them to imagine how they would feel if there was a law prohibiting their marriage.”

“All Australians deserve the same choices available to Mr Mathieson and Ms Gillard.”

Julia Gillard opposes marriage equality, repeatedly stating that marriage should remain between a man and a women.
