Ahead of Mothers’ Day, mums from across Australia are being urged to write to politicians in support of marriage equality.

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said a new website called Mums4Equality makes it easy for Australia’s mums to tell our national leaders they want all their children to have the same rights.

“In the first hour after the launch of the new site over 1500 letters were sent to federal MPs in support of marriage equality, indicating the concern that many Australian mums have about this issue”, Mr Greenwich said.

“We urge all mums who want their children to grow up in a country where everyone is treated equally to go to the site and send an email to their local MP.”

Mums4Equality has the support of Senior Queenslander of the Year, Shelley Argent, Sky News presenter, Mia Freedman, and former AMA President, Kerryn Phelps and her wife, Jackie Stricker-Phelps, all of whom are mums.

Mr Greenwich also commented on the decision of the Brazilian Supreme Court to allow civil unions in that country.

“Civil unions are not a substitute for full marriage equality and a national civil union scheme in Australia would only entrench a second-class status for same-sex relationships.”
