This Saturday thousands of marriage equality supporters in Gillard’s home state of Victoria are expected to take part in the Equal Love rally for Marriage Equality.

Equal Love Convener, Ali Hogg: “Attending the rally this Saturday is essential for supporters of equality, especially in light of Julia Gillard’s recent statement that tradition and her conservative upbringing are sufficient justifications for discriminating against GLBTI Australians.“

Ali Hogg expects to see thousands of supporters and their friends and families at the rally this weekend to express their anger at the Prime Minister and demand a change to the marriage act to end discrimination.

Gillard’s home state of Victoria has the 2nd highest level of support for marriage equality in Australia, with 61% of Victorians firmly in favour of equality (Tasmania is the highest with 73%, source: Nielsen Poll, March 2011).

Australian Marriage Equality Convener, Alex Greenwich: “The Prime Minister is not only out of touch with her own party (65% support), but also with her home state of Victoria… she voted in favour of gauging her constituents views on marriage equality, and I hope she listens to the loud and clear message they will deliver on Saturday”.

The rally will commence at 1pm this Saturday, the 26th of March, at the Victorian State Library (cnr Swanston and la Trobe Street).
