Julia Gillard is on the wrong side of public opinion on two of the most contentious issues facing her government – with a clear majority of voters opposing a carbon tax and supporting same-sex marriage.

Just 35 per cent of voters supportMs Gillard’s commitment to introduce a carbon tax and 56 per cent are opposed, according to an Age/Nielsen poll – a dramatic shift since just February this year. And 57 per cent support same-sex marriage, with just 36 per cent sharing Ms Gillard’s – and Labor’s- view that marriage should only be between a man and woman.
