Labor must win back voters lost to the Greens by advocating stronger action on climate change and supporting gay marriage, according to a secret internal review of the party’s performance that also urges the government to do more to court votes in immigrant communities.

Details of the Australian Labor Party’s 2010 National Review, obtained exclusively by The Australian, call for a series of reforms to the party’s strategy and campaign tactics after the government came close to losing power in last year’s election.

According to sources, the review finds the campaign functioned professionally at a national level but was derailed by government leaks and damaged by policy mistakes and tactical errors such as the cash-for-clunkers scheme and the climate change citizens’ assembly policy.

Although widely viewed as an error, “the real Julia” concept was successful in moving on the media from the leaks.
