Call-in surveys by federal Labor ministers in their electorates have shown strong support for gay marriage, putting cabinet under pressure to change the party’s position ahead of its national conference.

Regional Development Minister Simon Crean says that with the exception of church groups, most of the feedback in his Melbourne electorate of Hotham is in favour of same-sex marriage.

Resources Minister Martin Ferguson is running a survey on the issue on his website, set up so that only constituents in his inner Melbourne seat of Batman can vote, but he would not reveal the results.

Human Services Minister Tanya Plibersek reported overwhelming support for same-sex marriage in her seat of Sydney.

The government says the Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman, is appropriate, but Mr Ferguson said the place for him to put his personal views was at the party conference in December.
