It was somehow fitting that Australia’s most newsworthy priest found himself in the news on the day he was being honoured at a dinner to mark his 50 years at the altar.

Father Bob Maguire was the page three story in the Herald Sun with the screaming headline: ”I’ll do gay weddings.” Being a modern priest for the modern era who keeps his flock updated via Twitter and his blog, he tweeted: ”Spread the word, comrades. I will not do gay weddings. I cannot do gay weddings. The H/S headliner is wrong.”

In true Maguire fashion, the South Melbourne character who has earned the title ”celebrity priest”, if there is such a thing, told The Age he had an idea for the paper to correct the wrong: ”I hope the editor of the Herald Sun will make a sizeable donation to the Father Bob Foundation.”
