Gippsland Catholics have signalled their opposition to same-sex marriage in a petition submitted to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Catholic Bishop of Sale Christopher Prowse said “thousands” of signatures were collected in parishes across the Sale diocese before the petitions were submitted to federal members of parliament.

Last year federal politicians were asked to gauge the view of their communities on the issue of same-sex marriage following a notice of motion introduced to parliament by Greens Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt.

Bishop Prowse said the petitions were not meant as an “attack” on same-sex attracted people, but “a defence of the institution of marriage”.

“We believe marriage to be a permanent union between a man and a woman that is open to new life,” Bishop Prowse said.

“When a union is not able to propagate children, what does that say about the future of our society?”
