Marriage equality advocates have called on NSW Premier, Kristina Keneally, to join Queensland Premier, Anne Bligh, and Tasmanian Premier, David Bartlett, in supporting marriage equality.

The call comes in the wake of public support for marriage equality from NSW Deputy Premier, Carmel Tebbutt.

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said marriage equality supporters in NSW deserve to know where their state leaders stand in the lead up to the March state election.

“If the premiers of two traditionally-conservative states like Queensland and Tasmania can support reform, there are no excuses for the Premier of NSW”, Mr Greenwich said.

Mr Greenwich praised Ms Tebbitt for showing leadership on marriage equality.

“The more leading Labor MPs show their support for marriage equality, the more likely it is the Labor Party will rescind its opposition to reform at the Party’s National Conference scheduled for the end of the year.”
