Peter van Onselen asks, why not allow same-sex marriage?

When a majority of the population supports it, why won’t our politicians embrace it? Because religious lobby groups are powerful, and democracy doesn’t always get its way when powerful vested interests mount campaigns.

Gay marriage isn’t a first-order issue for most of us, but equal rights should be. After all, everyone is part of a minority that risks discrimination at some point.

What is wrong with letting gay people describe themselves as married if individual churches maintain the right to decide whether or not they will sanction such unions?
