The ALP will debate the issue of same-sex marriage at its national conference next year after a motion by Greens MP Adam Bandt was narrowly passed by the party on November 18.

The motion called on federal parliamentarians to consult their local communities about attitudes to same-sex marriage.

Banks MP Daryl Melham said he had received some response from his constituents on the issue but did not comment further.

He did not offer a personal view on the issue, instead he is providing a copy of section 142 of the ALP’s party platform, which states reforms to remove discrimination against same sex couples “are to be implemented consistently with Labor’s commitment to maintaining the definition of marriage as currently set out in the Marriage Act.”

Blaxland MP Jason Clare said his view on same sex marriage was “the same as the Prime Minister’s”.
