In a surprise Christmas gift to some in his party, Vice President Joe Biden has revealed he thinks same-sex marriage is “inevitable.”

“The country is evolving, and I think there is an inevitability for a national consensus on gay marriage,” Mr Biden said on Good Morning America.

He compared the issue to the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” on Wednesday, which all-but ended a 17-year ban on openly gay and lesbian service members in the military.

“We prepared the ground so that it was so widely accepted as it is today,” Mr Biden said of the repeal. “I think the same thing is happening across the country with regard to the issue of marriage.”

“The next effort is probably going to deal with the so-called DOMA,” he added, referring to the Defense of Marriage Act that bars federal recognition of same-sex unions.
