The battle for gay marriage in Australia is set to intensify in 2011 as campaigners from both sides of the debate lobby MPs in states where law reform has been signalled.

The Labor Party is expected to readdress the issue at its national conference in late 2011, but meanwhile MPs in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are advancing marriage equality bills which would cover same-sex couples in their individual states.

Green MPs have been particularly vocal on the issue, drawing concern from right wing and religious groups who seek to preserve the marriage status quo.

“The Greens continue their assault on the culture of life,” thundered the Catholic Church last week, according to The Australian.
