Australians who support marriage equality are being urged to make a New Year’s Resolution to meet their local MP.

Australian Marriage Equality (AME) national convener, Alex Greenwich, said 2011 will be a decisive year for marriage equality and personal contact between MPs and their local constituents will make the difference.

“The sudden upsurge in political support for marriage equality at the end of 2010 means in 2011 we have an historic opportunity to achieve reform”, Mr Greenwich said.

“But to turn the possibility of reform into a reality we need supporters of equality to discuss the issue face-to-face with their local federal MP.”

AME has set up a new webpage that allows concerned Australians to arrange a meeting with their local MP at the click of a button. The webpage is located at AME’s re-launched website www.australianmarriageequality.org.

The push to have supporters of reform meet their local MP comes at the same time as opponents of marriage equality are escalating their campaign against equality.

The Australian Christian Lobby has launched a major letter-writing campaign and it is understood some Catholic clergy have urged parishioners to sign a petition against marriage equality.

Greenwich warned, “Opponents of marriage equality are highly organised, well-resourced and determined. Not only do they seek to impose their religious ideas on everyone else, but they do not respect the religious freedom of those church celebrants who want to marry same-sex partners”

“If equality is to be achieved it’s time for couples, parents, siblings, friends and celebrants to make their views known to their local MPs”.

“In years to come we will all look back at 2011 as the year when Australia took a historic stand for equality.”
